The longest 24 hours of my life
My dad fought cancer for the last two years. Finally he seemed to be losing. 10 days ago, his oncologist gave him 3 months. Yesterday, he went to the hospital and I booked an airline ticket for today. Last night at midnight, my sister called and told me he wouldn't live through today.
I laid in bed, pinned between the protective curl of Jason and Elliott, unable to go to sleep, afraid that when I woke up my dad would be dead. Not that my going to sleep would make him die, but that when I woke up the difference between today and yesterday would be that today he was dead and yesterday he was not, and this is the way the day begins.
A few hours later I drifted off into a strange out of body feeling. A few minutes later, my sister called to tell me he had died.
Ducking away from the rain falling on the tarmac in Portland, packed for unending rain in San Francisco, I experienced a strange relief to lift above the clouds under a sunrise waning moon. A waning moon brings many things, and I was glad for the moment to be alone in an empty row of seats under the blue sky.
Today has been a muddled tide of stories and sleep and grogginess and trying to eat food and drink water. You cannot really ask for much more.
Captain Russo giving a speech after United's last 737 revenue flight from LAX to SFO. It was well worth the price of a confirmed ticket to get to be a part of not only the 737s retirement, but Captain Russo's as well. Listening to Channel 9 I heard the controller tell our pilots to hold over a fix and expect a 45 minute delay, only to come back a few seconds later to say "Just kidding, I thought you'd wanna hear that one last time." "If you could, delay us as long as possible." It was honestly pretty sad to hear, but after meeting Captain Russo at SFO it was refreshing to see that there's still guys at the airlines that loved their jobs, despite all the ups and downs people like him have seen over 3 decades in the airline industry. Thanks Captain, it was an honor to be a part of your retirement flight!
